Pilots in the 1930s Royal British Air Force needed a garment that was lightweight and comfortable in the cockpit but sturdy enough to provide a life-saving barrier if it came into contact with water. Ventile was the solution devised by a team of scientists at the Shirley Institute in Manchester—a densely woven, all-cotton fabric whose long strands swell when wet to form a barrier against the elements.
